Cheers To All The Mamas

We’re nestled into our plane seats. I’m sandwiched between Ellis (8) and Mason (10). Their heads rest in my lap, so close they touch while sleeping. I rest one hand on each of their tightly curled bodies, feeling the gentle rhythm of their breathing. It’s dark, maybe two or three in the morning. Only a few scattered lights highlight passengers who can’t sleep. And the engine hums as we soar through a starlit sky over Mexico, beginning our journey to Costa Rica for the very first time.

Exhausted, I doze lightly, trying not to shift or move so the kids stay asleep. Suddenly, Ellis cries out—a loud, unrelenting scream that cuts through the quiet and sends a jolt of panic through me. Mason shoots upright, eyes wide. Little lights pop on throughout the plane as passengers wake to the sound.

Ellis can’t speak or explain what’s wrong. I hold him close, discovering his legs have fallen asleep, causing both pain and numbness—a new and scary feeling for him. It takes some time, but eventually he settles, and slowly, the plane returns to its hush, and everyone drifts back to their own moments.

Later, when I share this story with other mothers, they nod, listening—a silent yes, me too, me too.

Motherhood is made up of a million of these moments—big and small. Midnight wake-ups, surprise fevers, teenage eyerolls, long car rides, quiet tears, messy hugs. Whether our children are 8, 18, or 32, these experiences connect us as mothers—through worry, laughter, love, and the deeprelentless instinct to care for someone whose heartbeat once beat inside us…and now beats bravely on its own.

So, to every mom who’s ever held steady through the chaos—Happy Mother’s Day! You’re not alone.

And to those mothering in all the beautiful forms it takes—caring for fur-babies, showing up for friends, or honoring your own mom’s memory—you are seen and celebrated, too.

Alright, my friend, enjoy your day.

love, Tener🌸
