Create Your Home Yoga Space

By June 2, 2020December 13th, 2024No Comments

A few years ago, in my “Build Your Home Yoga Practice” workshop, we began by focusing on creating space in the home that is both inviting AND equipped to offer the support needed for a lifetime of practice.

And now, while studios and fitness centers are closed due to the CoronaVirus pandemic, yogis are pushing furniture aside to stay strong & open, both physically and mentally during this challenging time. To support you in this shift & beyond, here are some suggestions for making your home practice a sweeter experience. Below you’ll find recommendations regarding space design, props & more that have worked for me.

Personalize Your Yoga Space with Your Senses

To create a space that inspires you to step on the mat regularly, begin by using your senses.

Sight

Start by removing clutter & gadgets that might be a distraction. Then consider lighting. Most of us are lifted by light, so take a moment to open the shades or turn on a lamp. You can also place objects that inspire you within view…little statues, pictures, or small things from nature. If space allows, consider leaving your mat unrolled as a simple reminder to return regularly to take care of yourself

Touch

You want to be comfortable & relaxed, so ensure that your space is warm enough for your practice. Temperature is a personal preference, but for ease of movement, most bodies prefer something above 70 degrees.

Scent

Scent is a powerful mood shifter. When my kiddos were young & things seemed to be coming unraveled, we would stop & put a drop of essential oil on our wrists, as a way to break the downward spiral. You can do the same at the beginning, as well as before Savasana, the final resting pose. Other options include choosing a candle, diffuser or incense that you enjoy. My favorite essential oil is the Meditation Blend by Biotone, but lavender and lemon work well too.

Sound

Sound also has a powerful affect on our emotions & mood. To add music to your practice, simply choose something you enjoy or try one of my playlists on Spotify to compliment your practice. You can also add sounds from nature for a soothing experience.

Invest in Yourself

I am passionate about making yoga accessible to ALL LEVELS & yoga props make that possible. For ease of ordering, below are some props I recommend. Please know that I do NOT receive sponsorships for promoting anything, so these suggestions come straight from the heart.

Yoga Mat

In a world where (PVC) foam mats are a dime a dozen, Yoga Accessories has produced a low-cost option of value. Not only is the Yoga Accessories Extra Thick Deluxe Yoga Mat less than a third of the cost of a high-end mat, but it’s a generous 6.2 millimeters (1/4 inch) thick.

A Set of Blocks

These are essential! Yoga Blocks help you be grounded, balanced, lengthened, or relaxed in any posture. (Be sure to buy 4 inch blocks instead of 3 inch)

Blanket

Mexican style blankets are super inexpensive & so helpful, but any solid blanket or even big thick towels will work too.

Strap

A Yoga Strap can make a lot of postures more accessible, as well as offer support during restorative poses. If you don’t want to buy one, just use a belt, tie or thin scarf.

Bolster

Buying a Bolster is more of a commitment in price & space…but I use mine every single day. It helps open the heart, support the lower back, and aids in restorative postures.  You could also try using a firm couch cushion or more beach towels or blankets.

Here are the bolsters I use at home and the studio: Bolster

Lastly, I want to note that props can now be found in numerous colors & designs these days, so if you have a bit more money to invest in your yoga space, take a little time to find something that suits your personal style.

I’m excited for you and your budding home yoga practice!
Send me a picture of your space, if you feel inspired. I would love to see your creation!
Lastly, don’t hesitate to reach out with questions. I am happy to help you get set up for a lifetime of yoga.

“When you build new habits, you are creating a new life.” ~ Yung Pueblo

Almost five years ago now, my little tribe hit the road for a three+ year adventure south of the border.

We set out to experience a different culture & way of living…to step out of our comfort zone & try something new. Along with those desires, we also needed a break from the pace of life here in the United States.

What we found when we landed in Nosara, Costa Rica was NOT what we expected & we struggled. Due to the choices we made around housing, schooling and work, life was far from the tropical paradise we envisioned.

But RIGHT NOW in the middle of this pandemic, we collectively realize that our experiences on the road, prepared us greatly for all that is unfolding now: the uncertainty, isolation, extended togetherness and at times, scarcity & fear.

Sometimes we choose big transition & challenge, knowing deep within us something needs to change. But more often that not, challenge & great uncertainty are thrust upon us by outside forces like storms, job loss, sickness and death…like the Corona Virus.

So I am feeling pulled to share our family experiences in hopes that some part of our learning provides support or insight through this crazy rollercoaster of a time. And if not, maybe it simply entertains you…because there will be plenty to laugh at.

These thoughts will be gathered here going forward.

You may ask “What does this have to do with yoga, wellness & retreats?”, since those are my “work” passions.

Good questions.

I don’t really have a simple answer, except to say that my life & yoga are so deeply intertwined, there is no separation. As well my yoga & meditation practice remained a steady companion & place for solace throughout our journey and beyond.

It may seem messy on some front to proceed without more clarity of direction, but messy is fine by me.  If you are cool with less than fully formed paths & want an update when I add something new…Sign up here:   STAY CONNECTED

I look forward to connection with you.
