Honoring Winter

By December 13, 2022No Comments

“”Deep within each of us lies a quiet place of calm, centeredness. Let us go there daily and be still. It is here that we gather our strength to stand rooted in our truth. From this calm place, we realize that the world is but a beautiful storm just outside our window” ~Tener

Every year, as the light fades and color drains from the landscape, I feel myself brace against the season to come. Internally, I dig my heels in and resist the cold, dark months of winter.

Then the snow begins to fall. Covering trees and streets and rooftops in a blanket of white.

In the blink of an eye, the little mountain town I call home is transformed into a storybook winter wonderland. The Sun Valley elves hard at work stringing lights and preparing for the arrival of snow lovers from near and far.  The excitement in the air is palpable. Contagious really.

It’s a magical time…and yet I’m always slow to emerge. I’m happy tending the fire needed in our old home to stay warm. Content making soup and journaling.

These early winter months provide the perfect nest for creativity. The darkness draws me inward. It’s here that I pour my heart into choosing quotes and curating playlists. I contemplate journaling prompts and craft yoga sequences. I design retreat schedules that blend connection & reflection, adventure & restoration in just the right measure, for those soon to join me in Costa Rica. I love this cozy, introspective, creative time. It feeds my soul.

And the snow? It always waits for me to emerge, ready to zip, zoom, tromp and slide in the fluffy goodness.

There is a seasonality to all life. A time to pull inward and a time for outward engagement. A time to nourish your roots and a time to bloom.

Your rhythms may be different than mine. Yet we all need time for quiet, reflection, and restoration whether daily, weekly, monthly or annually. In the natural world, winter is a time for hibernation and quiet incubation. A season where the beauty and life to come in spring is being cultivated below the surface.

In honor of your personal seasons and cycles, I encourage you to ponder.

  • What do YOU truly need at this time?
  • What feeds your soul during the season of winter?

I’d love to know! If inspired, reply to this message and share it with me. (sometimes simply writing something down can help it come to fruition.)
