Be Kind

“Let our hearts & hands be stretched out in compassion toward others, for everyone is walking his or her own difficult path.” -Dieter F Uchtdorf

A tribute to one of my dear soul sisters, Laurie Wertich.

At the young age of 41, my friend, Laurie, took her life after a lifelong struggle with depression…and the world is just not the same without her.

Laurie’s wisdom, authenticity, and compassionate spirit were a gift to my life.

We shared many experiences, but what I remember the most were our long, deep, truthful conversations. Together we celebrated triumphs and supported each other through struggle and loss. Over our 15-year friendship, I stood by and watched Laurie move homes many times…always in search of greener pastures…always trying to outrun her past…a past that I did not fully understand until she was gone.

With each move, Laurie would leave behind furniture and household goods, so our home is now sprinkled with her belongings…a chair, a set of mixing bowls, a favorite tea cup, quotes, and pictures. My small closet still contains bits of her clothing.

Like a child that has outgrown her blankie, but returns occasionally to rub the soft corner between her fingers and sniff the edge of the fabric to remember, from time to time, I adorn myself in Laurie´s things.  I sip tea from her cup and wrap myself in thoughts of Laurie’s beautiful spirit.

In the end, I now believe that Laurie is in a better place. Free of the early trauma that she endured. Free to soar in ways that were not possible here. But I miss her, especially on her birthday.

I felt pulled to share this very personal story on the anniversary of Laurie’s birth, as a reminder that we never really know exactly what someone else is experiencing, even those very, very close to us.

And right now, as many continue to struggle following the pandemic, the rates of anxiety, stress, depression, and suicide remain high.

So please be kind.  Hold people gently.  Listen closely.  Assume the best.

And ask for help when you need it.

We are in this together, so let’s take good care of each other.

love,

Tener
