Renewal

Spring’s Invitation to Begin Again.

With all the snow that has fallen here in Idaho and the northwest, it may feel like a cruel joke to mention spring. The longing for life to push up through the earth might overshadow noticing spring’s inching arrival. But if you pause…and tune in… the subtle signs are there.

Spring is peeking through grey skies with her gradually lengthening and warming days. Shafts of light enter my window at new angles. The birds now add their chirp and chortle to the quiet air. And the frozen edges of life begin to melt, filling rivers and streams with force and flow. There is a sense of Release and Renewal that awakens my desire to shift and renew myself.

I’m ready to shed layers and lighten up after our long, cold winter. Ready to move winter stagnation from my body and clear my mind. Ready to hit the reset button on my being and start anew.

Maybe you feel the same powerful urge for renewal. It’s natural, as we’re affected by the rhythm of seasons, just as all other animals on this spinning Earth.

To harness the impulse toward renewal, here are ways I take action to lighten up and reset my body and mind.

Clearing the Body

To lighten up in body, I gradually shift from eating heavy, grounding foods toward fresh, light ingredients and meals: from porridge to smoothies, from soups to salads, and simply consuming less overall.

I also turn up the volume on my movement…more active yoga, strengthening, and heart-pumping activities. Nothing too crazy. Just listening to my body as it calls out for more.

When you get quiet and listen, what does your body/ being longing for right now?

Clearing the Mind

To clear my mind, I work in two directions…I manage the noise and distraction I ingest and actively create space for quiet.

In this fast-paced, noisy world, it’s easy to fill every moment with sound and information, but continual overstimulation creates stress and dis-ease. My first step is to look honestly at the information I consume through my eyes and ears. This includes texts, emails, conversations, podcasts, news, Netflix, and time spent on social media. Despite setting boundaries around these things, over time I find myself swimming in someone else’s thoughts and opinions more than I desire. With a simple check-in, I recommit to my boundaries. It’s a continual process of remembrance and recommitment.

I also recommit to activities that quiet the mind and soothe the nervous system, like yoga, meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature. These have become cornerstones to maintaining my health…and sanity.
