Savor the Moment While Designing Your Future

By August 17, 2022No Comments

“Hello, sun in my face. Hello, you who made the morning. Watch, now, how I start the day in happiness, in kindness” ~Mary Oliver

Summer has started winding down in our home. With friend visits and family travel now in the rearview mirror, my attention is pulled toward the season ahead.

For me, summer always includes extra gatherings, decadent meals, and tequila cocktails. And the long, light-filled days, encroach on my well-established sleep habits.

Part of me is sad to have these experiences and precious moments behind me. Yet, I crave the structure and balance soon to come. And my body longs for the restoration that September brings each year.

Life often delivers a messy mix of wanting to savor the present; while feeling pulled toward a desire or plan on the horizon.

So, how do we balance it all? How do we enjoy the moment while designing and charting our future?

Some may disagree, but I subscribe to Oscar Wilde’s motto for living our one precious life: “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” Indulgence, on occasion, and savoring rich experiences are the spice of life, even if they bring you out of balance for a period of time.

To ensure we don’t get overwhelmed and overstimulated during periods of less structure and that our celebrating doesn’t crash all of our self-care habits, I find it helpful to make time each day for a little stillness and silence.

Creating space in my life for quiet offers me a place to breathe a little deeper, notice and savor the gifts unfolding in my life, and listen to what my body and being need going forward.

This is where I discern when things are out of balance. And currently, it’s where I feel the inner pull toward reset.

Fall is a natural time to return to balance and stability. Maybe you’re still out there “pushing the envelope” into these final weeks of summer and haven’t heard autumn’s call just yet. More likely though, like me, you’re hearing the whispers and longing for restoration and balance. If so, pull out your calendar (yep, I still have a paper calendar) and start designing your reset.

To begin, grab some paper and a pen and consider these questions:

  • What do I need more of?
  • What do I need less of?
  • And how can I take one step toward making sure those needs are met?

Once you know what you need, secure time on your calendar to work toward your desires. (September, October, and November….before holidays)

After years of helping people achieve their wellness goals as a personal trainer, I can assure you that this is an important step toward making your desires a reality. If you don’t create time for yourself, who is going to do it for you? (cue the crickets) 🙂

You deserve the time it takes to take good care of yourself!

If there are ways that I can support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m 100% rooting for you!

love,

Tener
