Rhythm of You

By September 20, 2022No Comments

“There is beauty to be found in the changing of the earth’s seasons, and an inner grace in honoring the cycles of life.” ~Jack Kornfield

Here, as we approach fall equinox and the balance of light and dark, I’m reminded of the rhythm that exists in all things.

The setting of the sun, the rising of the moon, the ebb and flow of the tides, the continuous cycle of life itself. Birth, life, death and rebirth again.

I’m reminded of my own place in this spinning world, my internal rhythms, and the seasons unfolding in my life.

The changes are undeniable in our home with both teens pushing away like swimmers making flip turns and shoving off the wall with full force. They crave independence with a fierceness that is palpable. And moment by moment, I endeavor to temper my feelings of loss by embracing the freedom that rests on the horizon ahead. The next season of my life.

I notice the natural changes in my body as I age…and try not to cling to the past. Instead, I adjust my expectations and have immense gratitude for my health, strength, mobility, and freedom.

I’m also keenly aware of the seasons unfolding in the lives around me. Friends dropping kids off at college for the first time. Some ushering “babies” down the aisle toward marriage, and others become grandparents. I witness career changes that have been in the works for years. Moves to new homes, states, and countries. And the loss of beloved parents and loved ones.

All of these momentous occasions deserve attention. An opportunity to consider the change in our life and its effect on our inner wellbeing.

Life is busy, full of distractions…and picking up speed at every turn. If we don’t make time for quiet and reflection, we might not grasp the fullness of all that is unfolding. We might miss the “juiciness” of life and the call to care for ourselves deeply each step of the way.

For some, turning inward is done in prayer or meditation. But as Rumi states “There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.” Being from the south, I first heard this sentiment expressed as “The are many ways to skin a cat”. 🙃

I’ve found numerous ways to pause and check-in. Most often though, the act of placing my feet at the top of my mat and taking a few deep breaths creates a reliable sanctuary for reflection. It is here that I notice my heartbeat, my breathing…the various rhythms of my being. It is here that I reconnect with what is most essential to me.

Regardless of the path or method, I encourage you to take time and consider the big and small transitions unfolding in your life. Feel all of the feels with each passing shift and season. Connect with your personal rhythm and remember your place in the universal rhythm of this big, wide world.

You belong here. We all do and I’m grateful to share a snippet of this crazy journey with you.

If there are ways that I can support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

love,

Tener
